There are multiple ways to make tallow whether it be on the smoker, stovetop or crockpot. To render fat, it is made by trimming the fat off of meat and allowing it to cook down low and slow.
You can render different sources of fat, too – pork fat (lard), butter (ghee), or sheep / beef fat (tallow). Whether you use a local butcher shop, shop at Costco or visit a local farmer, it can be easy to get a large cut of meat at a budget friendly price.

You are going to love smoked beef tallow for many reasons.
- It is a cheap and does not require any additional costs as long as you already have meat. Making beef tallow at home is free! Making beef tallow at home is cheap.
- Popular name brands like EPIC beef tallow and Fatworks Foods beef tallow can be sold for over $15.
- It has a high smoke point of up to 420 degrees, making it a great choice for seasoning the blackstone and cast iron skillet!
- Plus it is shelf stable and has a lifetime of one year in the freezer, fridge or pantry if stored correctly.
- Similar to coconut oil, it will not melt at room temperature up to a certain heat.
- It gives a subtile flavor to anything you put it on and is not overpowering in dishes.
- It is rich in vitamins and minerals like magnesium, selenium, A, E, D and K.
Uses for Smoked Beef Tallow
- Baste a brisket with smoked beef tallow
- Before your tallow has solidified, baste the beef brisket before wrapping it in butcher paper. It will be the most tender and flavorful brisket you may have made.
- Seasoning the Blackstone and Cast Iron Skillets
- Because of it’s high smoke point, using beef tallow to keep the Blackstone and a cast iron skillet seasoned just makes sense. It does not have a lot of flavor when used in this capacity and can handle the high heat these items put off.
- Make Blackstone smash tacos
- If you are making smash tacos on the Blackstone, add a pat of smoked beef tallow to your Blackstone before putting down your corn or flour tortillas. Not only does the tortilla crisp up well on the Blackstone but the smoked flavor is a ‘chefs kiss’!
- Add it to breakfast
- Once you try adding a dollop of smoked beef tallow in replacement of butter with eggs and corned beef, you will never go back.
- Replace oil or butter in recipes
- If you are making a savory dish which requires oil or butter, try replacing it with beef tallow! Our favorite use is in jambalaya
- Make Homemade French Fries or Homemade Potato Chips
- Depending on how much fat you have, making homemade french fries or potato chips with beef tallow is simply delicious! You can reuse the oil up to eight times before discarding.
- Up to 1990, McDonalds actually used a mixture of beef tallow and cottonseed oil to make their french fries.
- It is also great for hash browns and smashed potatoes!
- Deep Frying
- Use the oil up to four times when making breaded or battered items.
- Stovetop beef tallow popcorn
- Stir Fry Vegetables
- If you are making vegetables, add a little tallow to the pan for something different.
- Make beef gravy
- Freeze your beef tallow into small cubes to make a delectable, rich beef gravy at any time.
